Rüsselsheim. The current TCR (Touring Car Racing Series) championship team Target Competition is now relying on the new Opel Astra TCR. The Italian team that won both the drivers’ and teams’ titles in the TCR International Series in 2015 with Swiss racing car driver Stefano Comini is entering seven Astra TCR vehicles this season. Three cars are in the line-up for the global TCR International Series, and four of Opel’s new customer racing touring cars are reserved for the ADAC TCR Germany.
The Target Competition team has its home base in Andrian near Bozen in South Tyrol and is led by the brothers Andreas and Markus Gummerer. Team manager is their father Walter Gummerer and technical director is Albert Deuring, well known to motorsport fans as the long-time chief technician of the Abt Sportsline team in the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters – German Touring Car Masters). “We are very proud to be able to race under the Opel colors in the TCR,” says Andreas Gummerer. Markus Gummerer adds: “We are convinced of the Astra TCR’s potential and trust Opel’s extensive experience in touring car racing. For us, mutual trust is the basis for good collaboration, and that was present in abundance from the very first moment.”
Opel Motorsport Director Jörg Schrott is convinced by the new Opel team’s power and prowess. “We are delighted that the 2015 champions have decided to race our Astra TCR this season. We can only benefit from their TCR experience. With Target Competition, we have found a strong customer and partner for entry into the TCR.”
The 2016 TCR International Series starts on April 2/3 in Sakhir, where the touring car series holds two stages within the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Bahrain. The season kick-off of the ADAC TCR Germany is on April 16/17 in Oschersleben.
