Even the best drivers can reach their limits on winter roads. So to help you stay in control in snow and icy conditions, Opel offers a two-day winter driving course in picturesque Thomatal in the Austrian Alps. You’ll drive our latest 4x4 models and experienced instructors will teach you how to drive correctly on various ice and snow-covered tracks. After an action-packed day with a lot of fun behind the wheel, you'll be able to indulge yourself in the evening at your wellness resort.
Thomatal nestles in a valley between the Schwarzenberg and the Lungau Nockbergen, in Salzburgerland. It’s one of the coldest places in the Alps, making it ideal for guaranteed snow. Opel Winter Training comprises driving on snow and ice-covered tracks up to 4.2 kilometers long and, depending on your driving skill, you’ll reach speeds of 130 km/h. There are three separate training disciplines.
Participants will learn the basics about driving correctly in snow and ice. The theory section includes adopting a proper seating position, how to hold the steering wheel correctly and what steering technique to use. Participants will then drive on slick surfaces, learning how to move off and brake correctly with optimum traction, as well as how to safely avoid obstacles.
This focuses on steering, braking and accelerating in packed snow. The instructor first briefs the group and then, via a radio link, leads participants through a course which requires braking in curves and making load-alteration maneuvers. Once a safe rhythm has been established, participants will then drive the handling course on their own. The instructor watches each participant’s vehicle and gives them key information and tips to improve their car control.
This is a fun experience driving in ice and snow on a specially prepared oval track. Participants learn how to initiate, control and then end a drift. It’s about simulating extreme situations that may occur in daily driving on slick surfaces. The goal is to master a sudden break away, or loss of grip, and turn it into a controlled drift.
Participants tackle a slalom course, learning how to steer calmly and sensitively – while also looking in the right direction at the right time! Speeds are gradually increased as drivers become familiar with the course and refine their technique. It’s all about being able to handle the car confidently on slippery surfaces and learning how to take it to the limits of traction.
This is a competition on the oval track where participants have an opportunity to apply what they have learned so far in competitive conditions. Participants start one after the other, completing an introductory lap, two timed laps and a deceleration lap. Whoever sets the best aggregate time receives a winner’s trophy.
A spectacular event, run as a team competition, which requires both driving skills and dexterity.
Opel is the reigning FIA ERC Junior champion with the ADAM R2 rallye car, and the winners of the Opel OPC Competition will take a seat in one alongside an Opel works driver. Sweeping across the snow in this car with an expert at the wheel promises to be an unforgettable experience.
